The World Class South Africa 2012 National Final was held at the luxurious 15 On Orange Hotel in Cape Town last night where mixologists competed for the title of World Class South Africa Mixologist 2012. Judged by International TV personality Jennifer Su, one of South Africa’s top female mixologists, Chantelle Horn, Alex Farnell and Gareth Wainwright, it was Brent Perremore from Asoka cocktail lounge in Cape Town who came out tops. Brent contended against five other mixologists, Matt Peckham & Ikki Mbelle (JHB Mixologists), Calvin Foyle & Kwanele Sydney Mkhize (KZN Mixologists) and Charles Malan from Buena Vista in Cape Town. Brent will go on to represent South African Mixologists at this year’s Global World Class Final which will be taking place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil 8–12 July, 2012. The annual Glamour Aid Charity Dinner & Art Auction, South Africa’s most glamorous charity event on the social calendar, is set to take place on Saturday 24th August 2013 at The Bay Hotel, Camps Bay. The Glamour Aid campaign started in 2006 as a platform for celebrities and public personalities to give back to their community via various charitable initiatives. This year’s Glamour Aid Project consists of 12 prominent celebrities, including Victor Matfield, Brigitte Willers, Roland Schoeman, Michelle Botes, Arno Carstens, Francois Pienaar and Loyiso Bala. In addition, 12 acclaimed South African artists painted their interpretation of each of these celebrities, which will be auctioned on the evening of the Charity Dinner & Art Auction event in a bid to raise further money for the charitable causes. Glamour Aid strives to embark on different challenges to make a difference and assist in promoting a better South Africa for all. All proceeds of the Charity Dinner and Art Auction will be donated to the Make A Difference Charity (MAD) and The Chaeli Campaign.
As Glamour Aid’s Founder Brigitte Willers explains, “We believe that every little bit will create change, and we are committed to creating the opportunities for those changes to happen. “It’s a philosophy in a sense, we want to have a different cut to make us more unique, “ Ronnie McDonald, responsible for the menswear tailoring department, tells me, “It can mean a detail, it can mean a silhouette, fabric. It’s the idea that we’re constantly striving to be unique in some ways.” Over a glass of sauvignon blanc at the Table Bay Hotel in Cape Town, I chatted with Fredrik Folkesson, Product Manager and Head Sourcer Denim, about their jeans. “We looked at the market, we wanted to do a different cut when it came to silhouettes and fits, to [take] out the cow-boy and put in the rockstar instead.” says Fredrik, “A bit of rock and roll.”
Later, the festivities continued as a select few guests were invited to enjoy dinner and champagne at Shimmy Beach Club. The perfect setting at Cape Town’s hottest lifestyle destination, an incredible oceanside view, perfectly crafted gin-based cocktails and delicious canapés made by Shimmy’s own Executive Chef, Adrian Cook, specially curated for a delectable high tea-style buffet. Artisanal gin brands making a debut along with seasoned brands all under the same roof, guests including Liezel van der Westhuizen, Leigh-Anne Williams and some of South Africa’s biggest bloggers, and myself of cause, enjoyed front row seats to a showcasing of some amazing gin brands including Triple Three Gin (three variations) teamed up with Fitch and Leedes, The Duchess calorie free and alcohol free G and T, Hendriks South Africa, Beefeater Gin, Tanqueray Gin and The Botanist, whilst being entertained by the gorgeous ladies of Femme Fatales entertainment.
